Hartebeespoort - Watersports Galore

Nestled between the Hartebeespoort Dam and the scenic Magaliesberg Mountains, lies the charming little town of Hartebeespoort. Located in the North West Province of South Africa, Hartebeespoort is within a pleasant hour’s drive of both Johannesburg and Pretoria, and with its many activities and attractions, it is a very popular day-trip for city dwellers.

All manner of water sports, such as parasailing, yachting, wind-surfing, jet skiing and waterskiing can be enjoyed on Hartebeespoort Dam. Abseiling, rock climbing and hiking are popular activities, and the thermals created by the mountains and water are perfect for hang-gliding and paragliding, while hot air ballooning offers a unique bird’s eye view of this scenic area. Picnic spots and braai areas are plentiful and roadside vendors offer skillfully made local arts and crafts. Crossing the dam’s wall is quite a social experience with vendors offer refreshments to visitors waiting their turn to drive through the single-lane tunnel and cheeky resident monkeys hanging around hoping for edible treats.

Places of interest in and around Hartebeespoort include an aquarium, a private zoo incorporating a snake park, a cheetah conservation project, a predator park and an elephant sanctuary. Accommodation options are plentiful and varied should you decide that you need more than a day to explore all the delights of Hartebeespoort.
