Brits - Interesting Attractions in this Farming Community

Located north of Pretoria, en route to Rustenburg, Brits falls within the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality of the North West Province of South Africa. Brits was founded in 1924 on a farm and was named after the owner, Gert Brits. From small beginnings the town has grown tremendously, mainly due to the mining of the rich platinum, vanadium and granite reserves in the area. Brits is also a farming community, with flourishing citrus orchards surrounding the town.

There are a number of interesting attractions in and around Brits in the Bojanala Platinum District that are worth visiting. These include the De Wildt Cheetah Research Center; the Granite Works where the world’s largest diamond saws are used to cut granite mined in the area; the Rainbow Cultural Village where visitors can tour San Bushman, Ndebele and Afrikaner villages, as well as visiting a shebeen; and the bird-watcher’s paradise of the Vaalkop Dam Nature Reserve with its more than 340 bird species. There are a number of accommodation options available should you decide to take some time to explore Brits and its surroundings.
