Wakkerstroom - Endless Rolling Hills and Green Farmland

In the southern region of the Mpumalanga Province, nestled between endless rolling hills and green farmland, is the town of Wakkerstroom. When exploring the history of the town, it is evident that the town was once bustling with activity, but over the years bigger cities began to flourish almost forcing the town, which was established in 1859, into obscurity. But lately, tourists and locals have shown interest in the town chiefly due to its natural surroundings and birdlife.

Paul Kruger was inspired by Wakkerstroom's initiative when they established the first fenced game reserve in the area, and an interest in conserving nature has always been a focus point for the residents. When it comes to bird watching, magnificent species such as the Rudd’s Lark, Buff-streaked Chat, Blue Korhaan, Yellow Breasted Pipit, Sentinel Rock-Thrush and the Eastern Long Billed Lark can be found here. The grassland, gorges, forests and cliffs are also home to a wide range of animals.

Wakkerstroom offers visitors a variety of accommodation options and quaint restaurants with tasty menus line streets. Fascinating stores and shops such as the Glass Art Studio provide visitors with creative shopping opportunities, and friendly locals are always eager to share a story. Festivals and events are organized throughout the year. Visitors to Wakkerstroom will be amazed at its beauty, history and attractions.
