Sabie - Charming Town Surrounded by a Forest

Surrounded by one of the world's largest man-made forests and set on the banks of the Sabie River in a deep valley of the Drakensberg escarpment, the charming town of Sabie in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa is a popular tourist destination. Sabie is renowned for its awe-inspiring scenery and magnificent waterfalls with interesting, and descriptive names, such as the Bridal Veil Falls, Horseshoe Falls and the Lone Creek Waterfall.

As is the case with many of the little towns in the Mpumalanga Province, Sabie was established to support the burgeoning gold mining industry in the late 1800s. Rock paintings, artifacts, engravings and stone tools found in the vicinity of Sabie show that the San people occupied this lovely region of South Africa long before fortune hunting adventurers arrived. A visit to the SAFCOL Forest Industry Museum reveals the many facets of the history of the area and the importance of the forestry industry.

Visitors to Sabie will find plenty to keep the entire family occupied, including exploring scenic 4x4 and hiking trails, fishing, abseiling, archery, bird watching, boating, sailing, rock climbing and white-water rafting. Or get a unique bird’s-eye view of the splendor of Sabie from a helicopter or hot-air balloon – whichever way you look at it, a visit to Sabie is guaranteed to be worthwhile.
