Lephalale - Abundant Game and Bird Life

With its hot summer days, mild winter months and abundant game and bird life, the tranquil town of Lephalale in the Limpopo Province of South Africa is a popular holiday destination, especially for nature lovers. Lephalale, often still referred to by its previous name of Ellisras, is located west of the Mogol River and north of the picturesque Waterberg Range and is surrounded by bushveld terrain typical of this part of the country.

The nearby Mokolo Dam is popular for fishing, and some superb examples of ancient San rock art near Lephalale adds a fascinating historical element to a place primarily known for its wildlife. Hiking trails, bush drives and cleverly concealed hides in the area offer excellent game and bird viewing opportunities, either at one of the numerous game farms or at the D’Nyla Nature Reserve to the southeast of Lephalale. Visitors have a good chance of seeing most of the famed “Big 5” – lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino.

Lephalale is located around 40 km from the South African/Botswana border and often serves as a stop-over point for travelers to and from this neighboring country. However, with its friendly atmosphere and numerous attractions, Lephalale is a worthwhile destination in its own right.
