Meet a Fearsome Predator at Tongaat's Crocodile Creek
If you’re traveling through KwaZulu Natal in South Africa, Tongaat probably won't be part of your travel plans. However, this little coastal town does have a few claims to fame that may serve as a nice distraction whilst on holiday. For one thing, Tongaat is a major sugarcane crop town and it contributes to many of the country's sugar reserves. It is also the base of industry for both Tongaat-Hullet Sugar Limited and Moreland Molasses. Tongaat is home to Crocodile Creek, a crocodile breeding centre which is a favorite amongst younger travelers.
Tongaat can be found roughly 37km north of Durban and 28km south of Stanger. It is located on the banks of the Tongati River from which the name of the town was taken. The word ‘Tongati’ is taken from the Zulu word for the Strychnos mackenii trees which flourish along the banks of the river. The town was established in 1945 and has a strong colonial background. Much of the architectures is Cape Dutch and there is even an English village green which is used for cricket tournaments during the summer months. One of the towns attractions is a beautiful colonial house known as Amanzinnyama which houses the largest private collection of Cape furniture, silver, antiques, glass and paintings in the country. It’s a great place to stop if you love all things old and can appreciate the beauty and value of the pieces. Tongaat is also home to a number of churches – the most notable of which is probably the Juggernathi puri temple. This temple is a national monument which sometimes draws tourists to the town and might make an interesting stop if you are in the area.
If you head out to the edge of Tongaat, you will find Crocodile Creek. This crocodile breeding centre offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with one of mother natures most fearsome water predators. It has a number of baby crocodiles as well as a good selection of adults which can weigh in well over 700 kilograms each. The farm acts as a breeding centre for these ferocious predators and also serves to educate the public about them. Other attractions in the town include the Dudley Pringle Dam which is a great place to enjoy picnics and water sports. So make a turn at Tongaat and discover this tiny coastal treasure.
