Welkom - A World of Mining

In 1946, the Free State Province was rocked by the news that gold had been found on a farm, approximately a hundred and sixty kilometers from Bloemfontein. It did not take long for the mining industry to sprout roots here, and not long after, in 1947, the city of Welkom was established. Over the years the city has grown dramatically and remains a vital producer of uranium, mineral ore and gold.

Other industries such as lumber, agriculture and steel have also developed in Welkom and in recent years, so has the tourism industry. With a Grand Prix racing circuit, Phakisa Raceway, located on its doorstep and a variety of activities, as well as noteworthy attractions, visitors to the town have become more frequent. When in Welkom, be sure to visit the historical monuments such as the Old Indaba Bluegum Tree, Aandek Monument, Dog Monument, Voortrekker Memorial and the WWII Monument. Hunt for bargains at the North Park Fleamarket, catch a show at the Ernest Oppenheimer Theatre or browse through the town's history at the Museum of Welkom. The Gold Museum and the mine tours delve into the world of mining, while the Flamingo Pan and the Theronia Pan allow visitors to explore the natural sights of the city.

Filled with entertainment, nature, attractions and a fascinating history, Welkom is a city that should not be passed by. Take a day tour through the city or stay a few nights, either way Welkom is a destination that does not disappoint.
