Established in the year 1848, Smithfield is one of the oldest towns in the Free State and was a vital location in 1855, as the site where a peace meeting was held between Sir George Grey and the Basotho leader, Moshesh. Many of these historical moments can be revisited in the town at attractions such as the Basotho War Memorial, the Robertson War Memorial and the Carmel Missionary Station. Karoo House, Leeukop Farm, the Caledon River Museum and the Beersheba Farm are also noteworthy attractions.

For nature lovers, the mountains are a network or trails and routes that can be explored on horseback, mountain bike or hiking. Bushman paintings can be seen at various sites around the town, a beautiful golf course offers a little sporting relaxation and the nearby Gariep Dam Nature Reserve is home to a variety of animals and bird watching opportunities. When it comes to festivals, the Smithfield “Bibber” Chill Festival is the event to attend. It is filled with motorcycle events, agricultural shows, go carting, entertainment and competitions. Smithfield has something for everyone to enjoy and can guarantee a peaceful and revitalizing vacation.
