Fouriesburg - Unforgettable Tourist Destination

There are many fascinating towns spread out across the massive landscape of South Africa, and in the northern region of the Free State, Fouriesburg is one of those unforgettable destinations. Christoffel Fourie sacrificed his farm, named Groenfontein, to establish the town in 1892, and it was therefore named after him. Over the years the town has held onto their heritage, leaving behind breathtaking historical buildings and structures for visitors to marvel at.

Fouriesburg has a rich culture and many stories to tell. A variety of noteworthy sites fall under the list of attractions in Fouriesburg, such as Surrender Hill, where approximately four thousand boer fighters surrendered to the British forces, and Fort Campbell that is located nearby the town. Most visitors enjoy the breathtaking natural life and spectacular birds that inhabit the area, and two popular hiking trails are the Bushmans Cave Hiking Trail and the Brandwater Hiking Trail. The Golden Gate Highlands National Park is located approximately forty-five minutes outside the town and the Meiringskloof Nature Reserve offers visitors great bird watching opportunities.

Between hiking, horse riding, playing golf and rowing, visitors invited to attend the annual Fouriesburg Asparagus Festival that is held each September. During this festival, the quaint town comes alive with music, horse events, beer tents, food stalls, entertainment, fun runs and traditional potjiekos competitions. Visiting the town and the festival is an experience that tourists should not pass up.
