Cape Town - Embattled African National Congress MP Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who is the subject of civil lawsuits and criminal prosecution in the country's courts, could now face an internal hearing from parliament's ethics committee.
Parliament's registrar of members' interests, Fazela Mahomed, has recommended Madikizela-Mandela appear before the committee after she failed to respond in writing to several questions about her business interests and donations allegedly received.
She had been given until November 26, last year, to reply.
Mahomed's recommendation that a hearing be held to determine the facts was made to committee members in a memorandum dated February 6, 2002.
Madikizela-Mandela stands accused of not disclosing all of her business and financial interests, as required, in parliament's register of members' interests.
It has been alleged Madikizela-Mandela failed to declare her interest in a Soweto business, and also failed to disclose donations of R55 000 a month to support her lifestyle. http://www.news24.com/News24/Politics/0,1113,2-12_1141288,00.html
So, the Mother of the Nation is in trouble again? Given her preponderance for creating the wrong kind of headlines this is hardly surprising.
On the other hand, if we remember how this same Ms. Mohamed dealt with Tony "3M's" Yengeni, there is not much to be hopeful about. If she couldn't deal with Yengeni, Winnie will chew her up and spit her out in no time.
This is indeed a sad indictment on South Africa's so called "democracy", and the transparency that we were all told would be the hallmark of Mbeki's presidency. Since Mandela stepped down, this government has lurched from one crisis to the next.
Where will this all end?

parliament's ethics committee?
parliament's ethics committee? That is a misnomer as we all know the type of ethnics practiced in NSA.
Stompie's demise hardly warranted a slap on the wrist so why should this incident be any different Grim Reaper?

The Untouchables...
Winie certainly falls into this category. As I recall, after she was fired as Deputy Minister of Arts, Science and Culture (I think) by her ex husband, she failed to return her official car and cellphone for over a year...
The problem seems to be Winnie's popularity at "grassroots" level. The fact is that the ANC have not exactly proven willing and able to grasp any of these "thorny nettles" (Winnie, Tony 3M's etc.) and they prefer to dither until the situation becomes untenable.
Let us not forget that Winnie is still to appear in court of numerous charges of theft and corruption. Dare we hope for justice, however belated?

Teflon Winnie
Draadsitter has summed up Winnie's case perfectly. Any new inquiry will trail off to nowhere, as do many others. How often has a member of the ANC been successfully prosecuted? Last one I can think of was (Cell phone) Allan Boesak & he only served a token period.
