Cool

Hey Amy
Yes, crime is a concern here in South Africa, but you can't let it rule your life, you just have to be sensible. Like most major cities there are parts of town where you do and don't go.
Try not to dress like a tourist i.e. camera round your neck, safari hat, hawaii shirt etc.
I think there is more hype built up about crime in South Africa than is needed to worry about. regarding the rape here, we don't hear much about it, as I said above you just have to be sensible as in most countries, not walk around alone at night.
One city I highloy recommend you visit is Cape Town, the crime isn't as bad as here in Johannesburg and it is beautiful. It is at the southern tip of Africa, a must see.
As for the health issues, in South Africa it is safe. There are certain areas where you have to concern yourself about Malaria, but it is a small area.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy your stay here and if you need any questions aswered, just drop me an email.
Enjoy!

Amy, 60 minutes did a series on South Africa
a few weeks ago........a rape every 16 SECONDS, the fastest growing crime rate in the World, rampant AIDS (out of control!),
mostly black males doing the raping. The first course of action (according to one white female rape victim) is to go and get a shot to ward off AIDS! after a rape because it's the bigger worry! I lived there, was born there and cry for my once beautiful country!!

Same here. So much beauty destroyed and twisted by crime ridden minds. I cry too Pierre, but with so much crime and violence and poverty it's hardened me. It's hardened me enough to deny a little 3 year child of a few cents, with which the child would give to his parents to buy spirits.

When SA evolves in 2 or 3 decades, I hope I can return to a country, return to the beautiful home that I've dreamt of.

Hi Amy
I cry too for my once beautiful country, I lived there all my life and was extremley upset when I had to leave, the crime rate is just too high for me to bring up my twin daughters there, they will unfortunatly have no future there. There are alot of South Africans who are just dying to emigrate but can't "get out", I was very fortunate when we were accepted into Canada and although I love it here I will always think of South Africa as "home" If you have any questions please e-mail me at stoltz

Travelers should avoid nighttime travel outside major cities and use caution when driving in the former "independent homelands" of Transkei and Ciskei, which have been incorporated into the provinces of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Some areas, such as the "wild coast" in the former Transkei, have significant levels of crime and inadequate medical services. This situation, though improving, has caused problems for foreign travelers to the area.

Private medical facilities are good in urban areas and in the vicinity of game parks and beaches, but they may be limited elsewhere.

Some of the Koh Samui villas are set on peaceful hills adjoining sea. So, when a sea wave hits the big boulders below, you are actually able to experience some butterflies in your stomachs. Such is the experience of the exotic locales where these Samui villas are located. The villas are located in peaceful places, but not much far from action. You can anytime visit the flee market to buy exotic sea shells, or belts made from fish’s skin for you dear and near ones.
