Besides American movies, Disneyland, and a whole plethora of American exports, what is popular among the youth and the young at heart in South Africa?

KWAITO AND RAVES.HEY you know the thing i noticed when i visited home in december, was that we are starting to explore our own creativity, we are drawing back within ourselves to find that which pleases or entertains us, what motivates us. i feel the government should get more involved in the broadcasting stint, you know, they need to fund local producers and directors, and we should stop depending on the States to provide us with entertainment, because in the end that dictates our whole culture, entertainment is very influential, that is how americans are able to foister their identities on to others. let's call the coca cola phenomenon to a halt. what say thee.

I would like to see more movies where Blacks are portrayed as professionals, educated and people with morals and values. Who love themselves like the Cosby show. That was the best. Not just money hungry and out for sport and recreation.

Madam Borg,
The newest form of American imperialism is in the form of movies, arts, and culture that dictates to other countries "how things ought to be". In fact, South Africa has a rich cultural history that is often subverted for that of mass American culture.
Unfortunately, America exports stereotypes of Blacks and other ethnic groups in its movies that portrays negative images.
Here's are some open-ended questions for all to discuss:
What messages about American Blacks are projected in the media in South Africa, and how does that shape you opinion of American Blacks?
