Hey,
I am currently attempting to learn Afrikaans. Can anyone recomend some good websites, books and/or do it yourself home teaching. Can anyone recomend a good set of audio tapes to learn from. I have been gathering words and their meanings and some short sentences E.G. "Ek verstaan nie" But I don't have a clue about sentence structure or grammar. Someone please give me some advice.
Thanks. Later.
(and those damn double negatives.....)

Me too!! :)

I'm in a similar situation. I've got a really good book (Helena van Schalkwyk's Teach Yourself Afrikaans) but I have immense trouble with pronounciation.

And double negatives? No way.. The compound verbs and the possessive pronouns got to me.

Good book?

hey, I just ordered Helena van Schalkwyk's book that you were talking about. As well as a couple of other ones. With any luck they will arrive shortly and I can further my study. Thanks.

HvS's Book

It is a good book, yes, but a few warnings:

1) Don't trust the pronounciation guide. Get an Afrikaans speaker to help you.

2) She will often give examples of a grammatical convention, but no rule.

3) She will often introduce words which are not in the vocab lists of that unit, and sometimes not in the master list in the back.

That aside, it's a good book, as I said :-)

No prob.

Thanks for the warning, I will keep that in mind. I work with someone that lived in SA until he was 12 so I think he could help me on how to pronounce some of the vocab. Right on. I ordered a couple other books as well. So it will be interesting to see how they compare.

Sorry.

I know. Sorry. I did feel a bit guilty about not posting the full link, but I couldn't remember it, and I was in a bit of a rush :-)

Some of the Koh Samui villas are set on peaceful hills adjoining sea. So, when a sea wave hits the big boulders below, you are actually able to experience some butterflies in your stomachs. Such is the experience of the exotic locales where these Samui villas are located. The villas are located in peaceful places, but not much far from action. You can anytime visit the flee market to buy exotic sea shells, or belts made from fish’s skin for you dear and near ones.
