Learning Afrikaans

Hi, I'm unfamiliar with Afrikaans, and am currently starting at the very basics. Does anyone else have any tips, advice etc on coming to grips with this language?

I'm curious, but is Afrikaans phonetic? Or is it like English where many words are not spelled like what they sound?

It's pretty phonetic, the trick is coming to grips with what the actual sounds are. Some, like the "g" are very hard to find equivalents for in english.
