Hi, nice South African folks!!

I'm preparing to visit South Africa this September for the occasion of my (gulp) 30th birthday. I must confess it will be a mostly urban visit (no safari-type things; too expensive and too many shots needed), entering via JNB, spending 2-3 days in the JNB-Pretoria area and then - ideally - a rail journey on the Trans Karoo to Cape Town, stopping in Kimberley.

The rail plans are currently hindered by the fact that I am unable to confirm whether the Trans Karoo rail route still operates. Spoornet's website is rather freight-focused.

Anyhow, among my various great loves in this life are (in addition to travel!) architecture, religion (Judaism, please - Thank you.), music, language, the outdoors, and theatre. So, I wanna see the old Great Synagogue in JHB (even if it has in fact been turned into a fried chicken restaurant, as I've been told), the ol' General Post Office (architecture, doncha know), any other urban accomplishments in the non-fatal parts of Jo'burg.

Would LOVE to learn a touch of Afrikaans, Zulu, Xhosa...where can I do that? (It's not like you can grab some "Teach Yourself Xhosa" tapes at your local American corner store.)

And hey is City Lodge in Sandton an OK place to stay? I'm leaning toward the Sheraton Pretoria due to good experiences with the Sheraton brand, but I wouldn't mind saving a few rand.

Anyhow, I welcome all comments/suggestions/criticisms/'Are you nuts?'es/dinner ideas/theater reviews/etc.

Thanks,
seth.j.powell

Hi there

The trans karoo is still operational. Spoornets passenger services now fall under the Shosholoza Meyl which operates passenger express trains to Cape Town, Bloemfontein, East London, Port Elizabeth, George, Durban, Newcastle and a whole lot of other towns and cities. For more information visit:

http://www.spoornet.co.za/Spoornet/CDA/Articles/SPN_Article_Index/1,1065,2-172,00.html

(You're going to have to cut and paste the entire url)

Unfortunately they still do not operate an online booking facility, but you can book over the phone. These intercity trains are perfectly safe. I do not recommend using the Metro trains which are the intersuburban trains in Johannesburg. They are apparantly still fine in Cape Town however.

The Great Synagogue in Wolmarans Street has indeed been converted to a pub and fast food chicken outlet (at least it's not pork). The Rissik Street Post Office is sadly rather derilict as much of the JOhannesburg CBD has become. However the area is on the up again, with crime having been slashed by more than 40% since the installation of closed circuit cameras and investments are starting to trickle back.

Also there is nothing wrong with the City Lodge in Sandton, or with the Sheraton in Pretoria, take your pick. I hope you enjoy your stay...

Some of the Koh Samui villas are set on peaceful hills adjoining sea. So, when a sea wave hits the big boulders below, you are actually able to experience some butterflies in your stomachs. Such is the experience of the exotic locales where these Samui villas are located. The villas are located in peaceful places, but not much far from action. You can anytime visit the flee market to buy exotic sea shells, or belts made from fish’s skin for you dear and near ones.
