I am looking for a liquor made in S. Africa that is similar to Bailey's Irish Cream . I believe it is called Cream de Velvet or something like this. Can anyone tell me who makes this, the full name and where I might find it? THanks.

Have you ever tasted Amarula? It is made from the amarula fruit that elephants eat in the wild. It's mixed with a cream, and I think is better than Baileys! I am in Australia and here a bottle is usually about $30, but you can get miniature ones (for those lonely nights!).
Have it over ice, and sip it reminiscing with good SA friends! Good luck!

I think what you are looking for is Cape Velvet. It is used drinks like Springboks. I too love Amarula, might have a Dom Pedro with Amarula when I get home tonight.

CHEERS !

Cape Velvet

Howzit from Brisbane, Australia.

I stayed in Ellisras, SA for a couple of months and fell in love with Cape Velvet. If I remember it was made by Santhagen and unlike Baileys is based on Brandy and Cape bone dry white wine. I don't have a recipe for it as such, but bumped into 2 SA ladies on the weekend who said they had a recipe for it, so here's hoping.
In the meantime here's a good recipe for a Baileys substitute.
1 cup whiskey
400mls sweetened condensed milk
300 mls thickened cream
3 eggs
1/2 teaspoon coconut (or almond) essence
1 1/2 tablespoons choclate topping

Whisk all ingredients in blender - store in sterilised bottles in refrigerator. If you get the chance!
Regards
Em
