The Centre for Creative Arts was established in 1996 by the Development and Social Sciences department of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Their main objective is to create opportunities for artists, and to build creative bonds and relationships between the various art forms, such as music, poetry, dancing, filmmaking, art. Seminars, projects, concerts, training programs and workshops are also hosted by the Centre for Creative Arts, to create awareness and promote art to both the adult public and the youth. The centre is responsible for organizing four large festivals every year, of which one is the Time of the Writer Festival.

The goal of the Time of the Writer Festival is to expose artists, in all the divisions of the arts, to the public and to give those in attendance the freedom to join in on the interactive program that is available. It gives everyone the opportunity to explore and investigate the different art forms and to develop and seek guidance on their own work and aspirations. This year, the Time of the Writer Festival will take place for the eleventh year, between the 25th and the 30th of March 2008. Durban will come alive with artistic splendor, and an extravaganza of masterful workmanship and performances.

Throughout the day, activities and exhibitions will be held at various venues around Durban, displaying the very best forms of art from South Africa and Africa. In the evenings, the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, will host all the local and international talents, giving the public the rare opportunity to hear the authors and poets read aloud some of their most recent works, and sit in on discussions afterwards. At theses appearances, the audience members are requested to ask questions of the authors, so as to gain an understanding the artist’s work, discovery and creative imagination flow. Exact times, dates and program schedules will be released during the month of February.

The festival also runs a Short Story Competition each year, exclusively for schools. Learners are encouraged to write a short story in a language of their choice, with English, Afrikaans and Zulu being the languages they may choose from. Each short story must be five pages, or less, and the winners are announced at the festival, on the 29th of March 2008.

The Time of the Writer Festival is a celebration of the talent and creativity that is alive in the country and across the continent. It assists unknown artists and literary minds to promote themselves to the world, and share their thoughts and creative processes with the eager audiences and festival goers.
