Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls - South Africa
In 2007 a number of young South African girls from disadvantaged backgrounds can look forward to a remarkable opportunity for an outstanding education. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy built in Henley-on-Klip in Meyerton, South Africa is set to nurture the countries future leaders who would otherwise not have had the benefit of a good education. The school was opened on Tuesday 2 January 2007 with a star-studded event and much excitement.
For many years Oprah Winfrey had the goal of creating a high-standard school to educate gifted girls of South Africa who come from impoverished homes. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa is under the management of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy Foundation. The Academy in Meyerton houses only the best facilities including residences, a dining hall, a wellness center, gymnasium, library, theater and so forth. Academically skilled girls attending the Academy will be helped to develop their potential to the full in the intellectual, leadership and social spheres. 152 girls have been carefully selected to start at the Leadership Academy in 2007. The group will be entering grade 7 and grade 8. In the years to follow the Academy will eventually provide some 450 disadvantaged girls with a top-class education. Teachers and administrators from South Africa have been chosen according to strict standards. The curriculum of the Leadership Academy includes subjects such as mathematics, languages, social science, natural science, arts, culture and life orientation. Expanding across all aspects of the school is the them of leadership development.
Oprah Winfrey received much praise from South Africa's former president and world renowned humanitarian Nelson Mandela. He is recorded as stating: “Oprah is not only investing in a few young individuals, but in the future of our country”. He exclaimed how indebted South African's are to Oprah's fine efforts.
The opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy in South Africa was attended by a large number of celebrities. Amongst the ranks of stars were Mary J. Blige, Babyface, Tina Turner, Maria Carey, Sydney Poitier and Chris Rock. Accompanying the Hollywood celebrities was Wangami Matai, a Nobel Laureate and Dr. Andrew Young, South Africa's previous US ambassador. All who attended the marvelous event enjoyed a great performance by India Arie. The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy is set to produce a nation of well educated leaders, certain to bring countless benefits to South Africa.

Ms Oprah Winfrey and all the staff, I need to thank you for an excellent job of instilling a reading culture and grooming our girls into becoming leaders. I personally experienced this good work upon my own child. It is like observing a seed blooming into a flower.God bless you all.

hi, im a single mom of 2, i have aplied for my daughter i pray that God help me and the rest of people to get a chance to study with this academy, im currently trying everything for them to get better education but i do not afford. its just a long streghtch for me. God bless everyone and Oprah by doing all of this

I have been following progress and news about Winfrey Oprah school for Girls ,I am certain that this is what my daughter needs ,she is 3yrs now but when she is nine i am talking her straight to meyerton and enroll her there ,I know she will make it she i brillant maybe she will be the SA president

I HAVR RAISED MARIA FROM 7-14 YEARS.SHE IS A BRILLIANT YOUNG BLACK GIRL FROM A VERY POOR FAMILY,NO EDUCATION HISTORY.MARIA IS HIGH IQ IN MATHS,ENGLISH,SCIENCE,LANUAGES.SHE HAS AL THE LEADER QUALITIES U CAN THINK OF IN A GIRL HER AGE.HER MOTHER DIED MARCH-2009.I REALLY PRAY THAT OPRAH WILL INTERVIEW HER TO HER ACADEMY FOR GIRLS AS MARIA HAVE VERY STUNNING PERSONALITY TO INTERACT WITH OTHER GIRLS AND SHE HAS A WONDERFULL,POSSITIVE PERONALITY TO GIVE.THIS IS A GIRL WE CANT LOOSE DUE TO POVERTY AND NOT LET HER HAVE ALL CHANCES LOST TO BECOME THE NEXT WOMAN WHO WILL LIFT UP ALL OTHER KIDS AND WOMAN OF THE FUTURE.PLEASE SHE COPE VERY HARD ON HER OWN,WITH MY HELP WHERE POSSIBLE,TO FINISH SCHOOL IN THE TOWNSHIPS TO UPLIFT HERSELF AND HER FAMILY.I KNOW SHE WILL NEVER DISSAPOINT UR ACADEMY
