Freedom Day Celebrations

Celebrate Freedom Day this year by experiencing true traditional African culture. An African dance festival is being held in Cape Town on Freedom Day (27 April 2006). The festival will feature a traditional dance competition to be held between 12 different schools and community groups from around Khayelitsha. All those competing have been trained in traditional dance as well as instrument making and stage performance. Large cash prizes will be awarded to the best groups, including a prize for the best costumes.

Authentic homemade African food will be on sale to those who attend this fantastic event. Hand made craft work can also be purchased at the festival.

All proceeds obtained from this Freedom Day dance festival will go to the building of a children’s clinic in Khayelitsha, a worthy cause indeed.

The judges for the traditional dance competition will be: Dr Deirdre Hansen – an ethnomusicologist, Dizu Plaatjies – a leading Xhosa folk musician, Vuyo Plaatjies – fashion designer and Wanda Made – a professional musician. The MC will be DJ Xola Mkefe, well known to Radio Zibonele and Radio Umshlobowenene listeners.

Security at the venue will be excellent with 12 security guards, keeping you and your vehicle safe as well as a professional paramedic team.
