Experience Wild Africa at Pongola Game Reserve

Approximately 450 kilometers from Johannesburg, in South Africa, and 350 kilometers from Durban, lies the perfect bush getaway destination in KwaZulu Natal, the Pongola Game Reserve. As the oldest reserve in South Africa and the second oldest in the world, the Pongola Game Reserve has maintained the pristine condition it was in when it was declared a nature reserve by the late President Paul Kruger in 1894. Its magnificent variety of wildlife and spectacular landscapes makes this game reserve an amazing African adventure.

This wonderful wildlife sanctuary has drawn local and international visitors with its diverse attractions and variety of ways to enjoy nature. Accommodation at Pongola Game Reserve is affordable and luxurious, and visitors have a choice between the Mpalane Fishing Lodge, the Mhlozi Bush Vamp, Mvubu Game Lodge, Sondaba Bush Camp, Nkwazi Lodge and the Inyati Lodge. The Pongola Game Reserve has also received many awards, such as the Natal Parks Board Conservationist of the Year Award in 1993, the Department of Agriculture Themba Award for Soil Conservation in 1988, the Wildlife Ranching SA Award in 2007, and winning the SA Hunters Association Conservation Award in 1985 and again in 1989.

Visitors can to look forward to viewing a large variety of wildlife that includes the giraffe, zebra, elephant, rhino, leopard, buffalo, hyena, hippopotamus, crocodile and wildebeest. For a while, the elephant numbers in Pongola were dwindling, and two breeding herds were introduced to the park to boost their numbers. In October 2006, the park also welcomed twelve new black rhino residents in support of the WWF Black Rhino Range Expansion Project. Visitors to the reserve will be able to enjoy the unique experience of Rhino Tracking, with professional guides who will teach visitors how to track their spoor (foot prints), and watch these African giants from hidden areas in the bush. The elephant monitoring program is another wonderful activity to explore. Bird watching enthusiasts will be able to view many of the 350 species of birds that live in the reserve.

Some of the other exciting ways to enjoy the wildlife with include games drives, canoeing, boat cruises, guided walks, the Fish Eagle Safari Boat experience and Tiger Fishing. Horse trails are also available, and these activities have been selected by the reserve to give visitors a choice on how they would like to experience their wildlife adventure. If the excursions prove to be too exhausting, the staff at the Mvubu Spa have just the right treatments to help visitors to relax, soothe aching muscles and enjoy indulgent treatments amongst the tranquility of nature.

Pangola Game Reserve combines the superior beauty of nature, with luxury accommodation, exciting attractions and secrets to survival and conservation. Their contribution to the wildlife of South Africa is invaluable and on going story of protection and rehabilitation.
