Art’s Alive – September Couldn’t Get Better

September is keenly anticipated by South Africans as the end of winter and the beginning of spring. But to lovers of the arts – dance, music, visual arts, theatre, film, poetry, comedy and more – September is especially exciting. The annual Art’s Alive festival, held in Johannesburg throughout the month of September, really has something for everyone, attracting visitors from far-flung places.

Art’s Alive opens on August 31st 2007 in Newtown, Johannesburg with a concert at the Johannesburg City Hall. From Saturday 1st September the fun continues at venues from Newtown to Soweto. The line-up promises to be awe-inspiring, with artists from Mali, Brazil, France, Cuba, Guinea, India, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and of course, throughout South Africa, gathering together to showcase their talents to appreciative audiences.

Highlights of the Arts Alive program include a tribute to Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, which will be held at the Hector Pieterson Museum throughout the festival. Visitors to the Johannesburg Art Gallery will be captivated by the Sasol Wax Art Award and Africa Remix exhibition which is highly acclaimed.

The Dance Factory will feature a number of performers, including South Africa’s Afrikan and the Tunisian dance company, Sybel Ballet Theatre. At Museum Africa, young South African film makers will be given an opportunity to present their work at the International Student Film Festival.

An exciting new feature of the Art’s Alive festival will be a collaboration with India’s consul-general to include Indian content, such exhibitions, films, puppet shows and dance shows. Exceptional Indian talent can be experienced at Bassline when jazz group Mrigaya perform on Sunday 2nd September and Vikku Vinayakram on 28th September.

Zoo Lake in Parkview will be the venue for Jazz on The Lake on Sunday 2nd September, featuring international and local artists like Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and South African singer Sibongile Khumalo. In the past, this Art’s Alive event has proven to be very successful as audiences enjoy outstanding jazz in beautiful surroundings.

“Lockdown” weekend will round off a month of diverse and dazzling talent. At a ticket cost of R100, ticket holders will gain access to all Art’s Alive events taking place in Johannesburg on the weekend of 28th and 29th September and this promises to be a party of note.
