The Beaches of Clifton - A Trend-Setters Paradise

The suburb of Clifton in Cape Town is well known as a vacationer's paradise. Boasting 4 coves, Clifton's beaches have been named 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Separated by massive granite boulders, the beaches of Clifton each offer a unique set of characteristics. Clifton is the jewel of the South African Cape Peninsula, attracting local and international jet-setters.

Clifton's beaches have been rated amongst Discovery Travel Channel's Top Ten Beaches in both 2003 and 2004 as well as being designated as Blue Flag beaches. The beautiful beach with magnificent Table Mountain as a backdrop is sparkling and clean. Tanned bodies can be seen scattered across the white sands. Clifton has a vibrant and glamorous ambiance, attracting trend-setters from all over. Clifton's 4th beach is typically the busiest. The young and trendy spend hours here sunbathing, playing beach volleyball or tossing a frisbee. The majority are there to be seen rather than to take advantage of the cool waters. Clifton 4th has all the necessary conveniences including ablution and changing room facilities, kiosks selling a variety of snacks and cold-drinks as well as ice-cream vendors strolling along the beach. Deck chairs and umbrellas can be rented on the beach as well. Nearby is a lovely café as well as a popular restaurant from which you can watch the goings on of the beach.

Clifton's 3rd beach is better known as a gathering spot for Cape Town's gay population. The 2nd beach is preferred by the city's university students and younger generations. Clifton 1st is less frequented, but is still just as magical as the others. Clifton is well sheltered from the south-easterly wind that blows in the summer months. Only the brave attempt to dip their warm bodies into the icy cold waters of the Atlantic. Despite the cold waters, Clifton has very much the atmosphere of a Mediterranean resort with yachts, jet skis and speed boats providing entertainment in the bay.

Between the months of June and September, visitors to Clifton are likely to enjoy some whale watching, perhaps even spotting them from your hotel room. Dolphins and seals also spend time hunting and relaxing in Clifton's waters. Sunsets at Clifton are renowned. From deep red horizons to pink wispy clouds, there is little wonder as to why people flock to the beach to enjoy their sundowners or a sunset picnic - a truly unforgettable sight. Tourists in Cape Town will be sure to take delight in the stunning Clifton beaches.
